Beartooth Ranger District winter road closures

The Main Fork Rock Creek Road on the Beartooth Ranger District (Forest Road #2421) leading to the Glacier lake Trailhead has been closed to reduce impacts to the road surface. The closure extends from Limberpine Campground to the end of the road and includes all Forest Service spur roads that connect to it.
Traffic on the road earlier this winter caused significant rutting from vehicles driving on the road and getting stuck in the deeper snow. The Custer Gallatin NF invested over $200,000 into heavy maintenance and repair of this road in the last two years. To address the public safety concerns as well as the damage to the road, the Beartooth Ranger District has closed the road to wheeled motor vehicles for the remainder of the winter season until April 15th. The road and area above the closure remains open to use by snow machines for the winter.
The West Fork of Rock Creek Road (Forest Road #2071) is open for use by snow machines beyond the winter closure at the Timbercrest Girl Scout Camp from December 1st to April 15th. This road is also groomed by the Beartooth Recreational Trails Association for the first 5 miles to provide cross-country skiing, walking and snow-shoeing at no charge to the public. Doggy bags and a disposal container at the road closure are provided to support maintaining water quality in this municipal watershed for the City of Red Lodge. The public is encouraged to recognize and support the shared recreational use of this winter recreation opportunity.
Other winter road closures on the Beartooth Ranger District include winter wildlife closures of the Silver Run Road (Forest Road #2476) and Robertson Draw Road (Forest Road #2008) from Dec. 1 - April 15. These are closed to all motorized vehicles including snow machines.
“We ask the public to help us maintain and honor these closures for the winter. Use of wheeled motor vehicles in these areas really impacts the winter recreation opportunities for the public, and results in unnecessary damage to roads which costs more to repair.” said Ken Coffin, District Ranger.
