Chester Albert Schwend
Chester Albert “Chet” Schwend died on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 in the warmth and comfort of his home and entire family.
Dr. Benson delivered Chester to Bert and Hazel Schwend on Aug. 16, 1931. He then delivered Celeste to her family the very next day. Chester and Celeste Ward were married on Sept. 20, 1952, celebrating 60 years together.
Chester graduated from Bridger High School in 1949. He lived his entire life farming and ranching in the area. He was very proud of the fact that some of his pasture leases on the Crow Reservation spanned 50 years plus.
Chester was the oldest of five boys. Brothers Charles, Les, Marvin and Dan were all present for Chester’s passing. Also present in addition to Celeste were their four children, Don (Lynn), Doug (Pam), Linda (Mike) and Cindy (Mark). Chester has 12 grand and step-grandchildren, and 15 great-grand and step-great-grandchildren.
Chester was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Chris and Rose Ward; and his grandson Travis.
Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Joliet Wesleyan Church. Interment followed in the Carbonado Cemetery. Cremation has taken place. Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge assisted with the arrangements.
The family suggests that memorials be given to the Travis Schwend Scholarship Fund, c/o the Bank of Joliet, P.O. Box 400, Joliet, MT 59041; or to the charity of one’s choice.
Special thanks go to the doctors and nurses and to Beartooth Hospice who cared for Chet during his illness.
