Cute faces, Red Lodge kids sell produce at Farmer’s Market
With Red Lodge schools out of session for the summer and an array of fresh produce to harvest, Food Corps member Alyssa Charney and youth garden volunteers bring their bounty to sell at the Farmer’s Market.
For the past two markets, Charney has recruited Red Lodge youth to harvest in the mornings from the youth garden at the Old Roosevelt and sell at the market in the afternoons. From learning about seeding, planting, harvesting and now selling fresh and local produce, Charney has provided the kids of Red Lodge with the full experience of farm to table. “It’s really great for the kids to have the opportunity to see the full cycle of planting and growing the garden and for them to be able to be involved in the sales aspect and interact with the customers is amazing,” Charney said.
At the July 19 market, kale, carrots, fresh herbs and mixed greens were the hot ticket items as youth volunteers Zoe Belinda and Will Oley used their adorable smiles and fun sales technique to appeal to customers. Similar to a summertime lemonade stand, Belinda and Oley successfully sold out of many items and made quite the profit, which will be used towards an official youth garden sign. “It’s really fun. You get to harvest it and then sell it,” said Belinda of her market experience.
