Doris M. Lochridge

Doris Marie Lochridge, 87, of Red Lodge, left her earthly home on June 28, 2013 in Red Lodge following a valiant battle with cancer. Doris was born on Nov. 3, 1925 in Red Lodge, a daughter of Lorin and Helen Lochridge. Doris is survived by two brothers, Paul (Rita) Lochridge of Bozeman and James Larry (Donna) Lochridge of Las Vegas, Nev. She has 11 nieces and nephews, over 55 great-nieces and nephews, and ten or more great-great-nieces and nephews.

Doris was a woman of many talents. As a bowler she won many trophies, was an excellent golfer and loved to fish. Her employment career was varied, but kept her in Red Lodge. She was a clerk at Flash’s Studio and Sawyer’s Grocery, and she worked in the Carbon County Clerk & Recorder’s Office. The job she held longest was as a telephone operator for AT&T, but with the onset of automation, all the operators were gone. In her retirement years Doris was an active volunteer at the Red Lodge Senior Citizens Center. As office manager she collected lunch money, coordinated the bus trips to Billings, delivered Meals on Wheels, and would help wherever needed.

Doris also served as president of the Granite Peak Chapter of the VFW Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the Red Lodge Police Auxiliary, the group that later became known as the “Over the Hill Gang.” They provided security services for civic events such as the Festival of Nations and the Red Lodge Home of Champions Parade and Rodeo. Doris was well known in Red Lodge and will be missed for her keen and questioning observations. A gathering to celebrate Doris’ life will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 at the Red Lodge Senior Center. Cremation has taken place, and a family committal service will be held at the Roberts Cemetery where Doris will be buried next to her parents.

Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel is assisting with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Beartooth Hospice, P.O. Box 590, Red Lodge, MT 59068, or to the charity of one’s choice.
