HAPPENING NOW: Rock Creek Fire containment still at 85 percent
Yesterday’s weather was warmer and drier with temperatures in the high 70s and relative humidity in the 20% range, keeping containment at 85 percent and acres at 950. Crews continued to patrol for hot spots within the fire perimeter and to rehabilitate fireline and helispots established during the incident. Rehabilitation of the contingency dozer/handline in the West Fork Rock Creek was completed. One 20-person crew and one helicopter is on duty, totaling 95 personnel. The Beartooth Highway (U.S. Highway 212) is open between Red Lodge and the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, which includes access to Cooke City and Silver Gate. The community of Red Lodge is open for business and campgrounds in the local area remain open. The weather today will be similar to yesterday. A crew will continue to patrol for hot spots within the fire perimeter and to rehabilitate fireline and helispots. A community meeting will be held tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the Carbon County Fairgrounds. Shawn Pearson’s Type II Incident Management Team will transfer command of the fire to a local Type III Team on Tuesday morning, September 3, at 6:00 a.m. This will be the last Fact Sheet for the Rock Creek Fire. Restrictions/Closures: A Custer National Forest area closure is in effect and includes closure of Silver Run Trail #102, Ingles Creek Trail #35, Beartrack Trail #8, and Silver Run Plateau Trail #60. The temporary flight restriction (TFR) is no longer in effect surrounding the Rock Creek Fire area. Stage 1 fire restrictions are in place for the Beartooth Ranger District, except for the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Stage 2 fire restrictions are in place for Carbon County.
