Hugo Rattin

Hugo Rattin was a life-long resident of Red Lodge, born to Peter and Candida Rattin on April 1, 1924, and passed away on Jan. 17, 2014 at Cedar Wood Healthcare Community at the age of 89. He lost his only brother, David, on Sept. 11, 1944 in World War II when the plane, where he was a gunner, was shot down over Germany.

Hugo loved Leola Luoma and they married on April 2, 1945 and spent 68 years as husband and wife. A Carbon County High School graduate, Hugo soon discovered what a creative and skilled man he was in working with his hands, and built a career as a finish carpenter, spending much of his career with Aasen Construction. He retired in 1981 and was recognized by the State Carpenters Union for being a 50-year member several years ago. Though detailed carpentry was his strength, he was a superb handyman. Hugo and Leola bought their farm west of Red Lodge in 1950, farmed there and raised four children: Connie Evans of Olympia, Wash., David Rattin of Red Lodge, Kathi Dew of Bend, Ore., and Fred Rattin of Dickinson, N.D. One thing admired most was Hugo’s love of family and his teaching by example of quality family values, whether at work or play.

He enjoyed snowmobiling, bowling, fishing, horseshoes, card playing and board games, especially with family members. He is survived by his wife and children, along with son in-law Howard Dew and daughter in-law Renee Rattin, 8 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date at Rattin Campground, named after Hugo’s father. Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel is assisting with the arrangements.
