Joliet Food Bank distributes Thanksgiving baskets

The Monday prior to Thanksgiving was a busy day at the Joliet Food Bank, with close to 60 families picking up food boxes filled with turkeys and all the fixin’s. Volunteers, including Joliet FFA students, helped to prepare and distribute the boxes, and Food Bank clients were grateful for this extra help. Food was provided through monetary donations, along with food drives from the local churches, the Joliet middle school classes, and the FFA students. In the past year, the Joliet Food Bank has helped over 96 families who have experienced hunger and food insecurity in the communities of Joliet, Silesia, Edgar, Fromberg, Boyd, and some areas of Roberts. With a monthly budget of about $500 (all through donations), they distribute over 15 tons of food annually. The organization’s mission statement is to “provide monthly food baskets to those in need,” and, according to President Martha Haverkamp, that need continues to rise. “Donations are especially generous at the holidays,” says Haverkamp, “but our clients are hungry all year long, and sometimes it’s tough to make ends meet.” Cash, checks, and food donations can be dropped off at The Food Bank on Mondays from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., can be taken to The Bank of Joliet, or mailed to Treasurer Marla Moody at P.O. Box 296, Joliet, MT 59041. Anyone in need is welcome to show up at The Joliet Food Bank on Mondays for a monthly basket. The only requirement is some form of ID. Haverkamp notes that some people just need a little help through a rough spot, and others – often families with small children – need help for longer periods. For however long the need, the Joliet Food Bank is there to help. Christmas baskets will be handed out on Dec. 16, and if you haven’t signed up, or would like to do so, please call Martha Haverkamp at 962-3589. The Joliet Food Bank will be closed Dec. 23 – 30.
