Michael G. Kane

Our beloved father, husband, brother and friend passed away in the early morning hours on July 10, 2014 in Red Lodge of natural causes. Mike was born on June 26, 1926 in Decatur, Ill., to Mark and Emma Kane. He grew up on the family farm in Carrollton, Ill., with his parents and brother, James. In 1943, at the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served aboard the USN Amphibious Tank Carrier LST 723 in the Pacific theatre, including Okinawa, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal. Upon completion of his military service, Dad returned to Carrolton to join his father in farming and raising registered Charloais cattle. Shortly after his return home, he met the love of his life, Emily Geers. They were married on Jan. 24, 1947. Together they had three children. In 1960 he and his family moved to Red Lodge to continue in the cattle business and ranching with his brother, Dr. James Kane.

He always loved the outdoors and all creatures great and small. He had a great sense of humor and loved visiting with his many friends. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. Dad will always be remembered for his kind nature and easygoing way and for teaching us to find humor and goodness in everything in life. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Emily; sons, Gary (Shirley) Kane and Mark Kane, both of Red Lodge; a daughter, Mary (Doug) Mackaman of Livingston; and a brother, Dr. James Kane of Red Lodge. He is also survived by six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed. A special thank you to Cedar Wood Healthcare for the love, compassion and care they gave to our dad.

Also, thank you to Dr. Fouts. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes at a later date. Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge is assisting with the arrangements.
