Newly formed Youth Group helps in community service activities

The Newly formed Red Lodge Community Youth Group was instrumental in raising money for non-profit organizations in the community, spent a fun afternoon watching the Super Bowl Game and helped serve at the Shrove Supper.
The Red Lodge Community Youth Group (RLCYG) was newly formed by the collaboration of several community churches in Red Lodge and the surrounding area back in December. Several youth and adults attended a meeting at Pizza Co. to discuss the possibilities of joining forces in order to create a larger youth group that junior high and high school youth could attend. Any youth in the community are welcome to join whether a member of a church or not. The youth will be able to spend quality time with youth from all churches in a faith-based organized and safe environment.
Many ideas for activities were discussed such as, game night, camp outs, movie night at the Roman, hikes, rafting and pizza night to name a few! The youth involved in this first meeting also agreed upon the idea that there would be community service activities that would be accomplished every month.
The second meeting was attended by youth that were chosen as the steering committee to work on the fine details of the youth group. At this meeting there was a lengthier discussion of what types of community service projects would be accomplished and also there was a decision made about what the first activity would be! The steering committee youth were very involved and vocal about what they wanted to see happen in this new group.
So the first RLCYG activity was a Super Bowl Party, graciously hosted by Matt Mullaney. More then 20 youth attended the party where there were plenty of Super Bowl munchies lots of games to play and of course a lot of football game watching! The youth had a great time and so did the adults that attended.
On the same day as the Super Bowl Party several of the churches also facilitated a “souper bowl” fund-raiser during church. Each church chose what organization their money would go to and how they would raise these funds. A few of the churches actually made crockpots of soup to sell after church service and others chose to stand with soup bowls after service asking for donations. More then $600.00 was raised to give to an organization of choice by each church. The youth were very proud of their first community service project.
Several of the youth from the RLCYG also helped wait tables and serve attendees at the Shrove Supper on February 12th at the Red Lodge Community Church. The youth took shifts cleaning tables, washing dishes, serving orange juice, coffee and then helping with clean-up. Many of the attendees commented on how wonderful it was to have the youth there sharing in the responsibilities of the evening. And the youth definitely took their jobs seriously. It turned out to be a great evening for them and a great help for those who organized the event.
Our intentions for this group is to get youth to come together in a structured, faith-based yet non-denominational activity night, where they can also have fun and congregate in a safe environment. Also, it is important from the perspective of the youth that this group will continue to participate in community service projects throughout the year. All youth are welcome and invited to join us at anytime.
If you have questions, or would like to join in the fun please contact the Red Lodge Community Church and let the office manager know, she will get you in contact with an adult who can answer your questions or advise you on the next meeting for the RLCYG!
