Shirley Joyce Leppanen

Shirley Joyce Leppanen, 81, of Joliet, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2013. She was born March 17, 1932, in Munising, Mich., to William and Wilma Leppanen. Shirley retired in the mid-1990s after a long career as a nurse She was also one of the first EMTs for the Joliet Fire Department. She is survived by Arnold Leppanen of Marquette, Mich.; a son, Jay Leppanen of Chicago; four daughters and two sons-in law, Tina Rathie and husband Ron of Billings, Francine Johnson of Fayetteville, Ark.; Kathi Kebschull of Roberts, Ann Watson and husband Rick of Cascade, Mont; a brother, Bill Leppanen of Bath, Maine; and a granddaughter, Kate Leppanen of Boston. In accordance with her wishes, she was cremated. Her family will have a memorial service at a later date. Smith Funeral Chapel, Laurel is in charge of arrangements.
