YWS awarded $58,000 grant

The Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary (YWS) has been awarded a $58,000 grant from the O.P. and W.E. Edwards Foundation Environmental Fund. This grant is for educational purposes and has allowed YWS to hire an education manager as well as an education assistant. Both of the new staff members will be on board the first week of November. Vic Loya will serve as the education manager and Tom Sly will serve as the education assistant. YWS wants to revitalize its educational programming in a number of different ways, firstly by going back into schools. Ellie Marion, Executive Director, states that YWS is really looking forward to working directly with the teachers so that useful and applicable programs are developed. Additionally, significant work has been done with the sanctuary’s raptor collection; many of these birds will now be used in off-site programming. Next, is to develop and offer in-depth educational programming for groups that visit the facility. These programs will range from classes to scavenger hunts to animal encounters. YWS also plans to offer fun and educational summer adventures and possibly after school programming. Finally the new staff members will be responsible for developing educational signage and exhibits that will be placed throughout the sanctuary’s grounds.
