Johna Rae Carpenter, 42, of Red Lodge, died Monday Jan. 21, 2013, at her second home in Billings. Johna Rae was born Jan. 6, 1971 in Missoula. Johna was the daughter of Douglas and Karen Carpenter and older sister to Douglas Carpenter, Jr. and sister-in-law to Rhonda Spangler.
Johna was raised and educated in Seattle, Wash., graduating from Nathan Hale High School in 1990. Johna loved Red Lodge where she spent many summers with her Grama and Papa, Raola and John Klepich, who Johna was named after.
Johna was raised by a wonderful family. Through an open adoption, Johna was able to see her own children grow up and have a relationship them.
Eight years ago, Johna was reunited with her birth family. Over the following years, Johna enjoyed spending time getting to know them.
Johna volunteered regularly at the local community center in Seattle and was selected to join the mayor of Seattle in a ribbon cutting ceremony opening the new facility.
Johna was a natural swimmer. She enjoyed, crafts, puzzles, cooking, and her cat, Spooky. Her favorite activity was spending time with her mother, with whom she was exceptionally close. Johna was supporter of Special Olympics and an avid Denver Broncos fan.
Johna was a spirited person, outgoing, and generous. She had a bright smile and great sense of humor. Johna loved and collected lady bugs. Her parents fondly called her “Bug” or “Ladybug”.
Johna was preceded in death by her father, Douglas W. Carpenter Sr.; her grandparents, John and Raola Klepich and Douglas and Lillian Carpenter; her birth-mother, Pamela Rae Goettel; and her birth-grandparents.
Johna is survived by her mother, Karen Klepich Carpenter; brother, Douglas W. Carpenter Jr. (Rhonda Spangler); children Jessica and Brandon and their family; sister, Heidi Goettel (Bob Cochran) and nephews, Lincoln and Barrett Cochran; three aunts and a large extended family.
Memorials services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Interment will be in the Red Lodge Cemetery.
