Karen Klepich Carpenter, 73, passed away in her Billings home on June 23, 2013. Karen was born on Oct. 15, 1939 to John and Raola Klepich of Red Lodge.
Karen attended Red Lodge High School where she was a majorette and Salutatorian of the Class of 1957. After graduation, Karen attended college in Spokane, Wash., before joining her parents in Thailand. She later was hired by the State Department to work in Vietnam. And, while in Vietnam, she met her husband to be, Doug Carpenter.
Karen and Doug were married in Red Lodge on Dec. 27, 1961 in the old St. Agnes Church. Shortly after the wedding, job opportunities took the newlyweds on adventures to Africa, Asia and Europe. By 1971, work brought the couple to Montana where they had two children; Johna and Doug Jr. In 1976 Karen and family moved to Seattle where they lived for 30 years. In Seattle, Karen continued to work for the government before she retired in 1994.
Karen and Doug moved back home to Red Lodge in 2006 to be among family and friends who had always brought joy to her throughout her life. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Raola; husband, Doug; and daughter, Johna Rae. She is survived by her son, Douglas; and many close and caring cousins and friends.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 29 at SmithOlcott Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Interment followed in the Red Lodge cemetery. Memorials may be given to Catholic Social Services of Montana, P.O. Box 907, Helena, MT 59624.
