To the Editor,
AmeriCorps*VISTA, in basic terms, is like the domestic PeaceCorps. VISTAs work behind the scenes to strengthen communities by working with nonprofit organizations. For example, you won’t see a VISTA serving food at a soup kitchen, they are busy working indirectly to build and grow programs to feed the people at the soup kitchen. The Red Lodge Area Community Foundation currently has four VISTAs -but that will be changing Friday. Our first VISTA member, Jessica Briggs, will be concluding her three year term of service on Jan. 24. Jessica has been an invaluable resource to the Foundation, and community, over the last three years. During her time in Red Lodge, she worked on various projects including: poverty/economic opportunity and development, technology, the Future of Montana Volunteer Corps, Adult Volunteer programs, and Veterans. One of Jessica’s most prominent achievements is creating the Carbon County Resource Directory - an everchanging listing of over 300 program and service providers in Carbon County. The Directory aims to ensure all community members can easily connect to the resources they need. The Directory is available in both print and online at bit.ly/CCDirectory. Jessica has also played an important role in increasing the technological capabilities of our organization and many others including the VFW and Chamber of Commerce. Had a hand in creating the Future of Montana Volunteer Corps -a program that encourages middle and high school students to get involved in the community through volunteerism. Spearheaded the adult volunteer program that recruits and connects adult volunteers to nonprofits. We would like to thank Jessica Briggs for her dedication to our organization and community. We wish her well in all future journeys and will always have a spot for her to volunteer!
