Joel Bertolino, Beartooth RC&D Director

The Beartooth Resource Conservation and Development Area (RC&D) Executive Committee has appointed Joel Bertolino as Director, effective Aug. 16.

Bertolino is a fourth generation Montanan who grew up on a Montana ranch just south of Roberts. He has continued his family’s tradition of agriculture by working as the Food and Agriculture Development Center Manager for the RC&D since 2007.

He specializes in the business, marketing and financial aspects of running a business through oversight of Growth Through Ag and Rural Development grants for local agricultural projects and by coordinating the Montana Food and Ag Center program that seeks to diversify the rural agricultural economy. He has also assisted in the preparation of successful Big Sky Trust Fund and Community Development Block Grant funding proposals.

Bertolino previously worked as a program technician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency in Carbon County and a Historic Preservation Officer for the Carbon County Historical Society.

Bertolino replaces Earl Atwood, who after seven years as Office Manager overseeing operations and special projects has retired. He helped to guide the RC&D through the transition from the National Resource Conservation Service in 2011. Atwood relocated to Montana in 2009 after retiring from Wyoming State Government in Cheyenne where he worked in tax administration,  technology management, and executive support for the Wyoming Public Safety Communications Commission.

The Beartooth RC&D is designated by the Montana Department of Commerce as a certified regional development corporation and by the U.S. Economic Development Administration as an economic development district. RC&D’s mission is to cultivate responsible economic development and resource conservation in Carbon, Stillwater, Sweet Grass, Yellowstone and Big Horn Counties.

Other RC&D staff members include Sue Taylor, Economic Development Director, and Jillann Knutson, Finance Director. For more information on the RC&D visit
