Bridger's Colby Zentner leaps beyond two Wibaux defenders to claim some valuable points for his team.

A total of 5 points is all that separated Bridger boys from having a chance to get to the State C tournament being held in Great Falls this week.

An agonizing loss to Wibaux in the consolation game 52-48 ended the Scouts dreams at the Southern C tournament in Laurel and their shot at a challenge match against Plenty Coups.

The tournament had not got off to a good start for Bridger when they suited up to face Wibaux in their opening game and fell foul of a 58-39 loss.

The Scouts found the demands of Wibaux too much to bear in the opening quarter, allowing them to basket 17 points against the Scouts 6.

The Scouts eventually relaxed in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, keeping close attention to their opponents before faltering in the final quarter 15-8.

Jake Kallevig got 13 points through the Wibaux hoops with Baylor Pospisil getting 11, Colby Zentner 9 and Jake Mitzel 6.

The defeat sent Bridger into a loser-out game with Broadus in a must-win game to get a shot back at a State ticket.

The team came out blazing and took a healthy 15-6 lead in the 1st quarter only to see Broadus fire up their own engines to try and take the sting out of the Scouts attack although the lead never changed with Bridger’s nose comfortably in front. A 3rd quarter 12-3 push by Bridger effectively sealed the deal despite Broadus coming back in the final 17-15.  The final score Bridger, winners by 10 points, at 58-48.

Kallevig scored 22 points, with Zentner on 18 and Mitzel 10 who also made 11 defensive rebounds. The team was shooting hot on their free throws, with Mitzel making 4 of 8, Zentner 9 of his 15 and Kallevig 7 of 12.

Next up was Park City, another knife edge loser-out game and again another step towards hope.

The Scouts took off quickly with a 17-8 lead before Park City admonished them in the 2nd with an 18-12 retort. The Scouts responded after the half with a 23-18 comeback and continued the pressure till the final buzzer.

Zentner took top scoring honors for this with 24 points with Kallevig not far behind on 20, Mitzel on 13, Baylor Pospisil 12.

Mitzel also made 5 of his 10 free throws and caught 11 rebounds in defense.

The consolation game beckoned against Wibaux. Should the Scouts win this then they had a challenge game on their hands against Plenty Coups. For Wibaux, the buck stopped here as they had already been defeated by Plenty Coups 61-57 in the semi-final.

Despite this Wibaux didn’t budge an inch in their determination to finish 3rd at Divisionals and to show their cards took an 18-5 lead in the 1st quarter only to see the Scouts overhaul them 18-6 in the 2nd. Bridger’s momentum carried them over into the second half as they carried both quarters 14-12 and 16-11.

The lead changed 6 times as Kallevig lead with 28 points, and 10 of his 16 free goal attempts.  Wibaux managed to keep other top Bridger scorers at arm’s length with Mitzel getting 5 points, B. Pospisil B. 4 and Zentner 2.
