Car Registration will go up in New Year

Registering your light vehicles  (cars and pickups) will be more costly starting Jan. 1, 2018 when a new 3-percent administrative fee becomes effective. The fee doesn’t apply to the county option tax which is the only fee retained by the county.   Motor homes or other higher priced vehicles will pay more because of the luxury tax passed by legislature.  An annual fee of $825.00 will be collected on new to 10 yr. old light vehicles registered with a MSRP over $150,000.00. The motorhome luxury fee of $800.00 will be collected on new to 10 yr. old motor homes registered with a MSRP over $300,000.00.  These fees will be assessed on 2017 expirations that are paid late in 2018. A 2015 Jeep Wrangler with a MSRP of $35,595.00 will cost the taxpayer $400.27 in 2018, instead of  $393.28, the cost in 2017.
The fee was assessed to raise revenue to operate the offices of Dept. of Justice’s Motor Vehicle Division.  The fee helps free up gasoline tax revenue to maintain the highways around the State instead of being used for operations of the Motor Vehicle Division.
