Carl J. “Dick” Hanson

Carl J. “Dick” Hanson, 87, passed away from cancer on Feb. 4 in Billings. His family thanks the kind, hardworking staff at MorningStar Senior Living and the thoughtful caregivers of RiverStone Hospice for making Carl comfortable during his last months.

Born in Bismarck, North Dakota, in 1930, Carl was the third of four children. The family moved to Billings during the Great Depression. Carl graduated from Billings Senior High in 1947. After serving in the U.S. Air Force in Japan during the Korean War, he obtained a degree in civil engineering from Montana State College in Bozeman in 1959.

In the 1960s, Carl worked for the City of Los Angeles, then for Standard Oil in California, then for Conoco in Montana, before taking a job with R.L. Stratford Construction Co. in Billings. He bought the company in 1976 with business partner Bill Kelly. They ran Hanson-Kelly Construction Co. until 1986, when Carl retired to his ranch near Roberts to spend time team roping, woodworking, and golfing.

Carl married Maxine Siderius in 1959; they divorced in 1984. Carl married Betty Namen in 1991; they divorced in 1993.

A member of the Masonic lodge in Billings, Carl rode in the Al Bedoo Shrine Black Horse Patrol in the 1980s.

Carl is survived by his sons Brad Hanson of Seattle and John “Jack” Hanson (Juanita) of Milwaukee; and by his grandson Julius Hanson of Zurich, Switzerland. Carl was preceded in death by his parents Carl M. and Ruth Hanson of Billings; by his sisters Marion Wilson and Juanita Harris (Art), both of Billings; and by his brother Robert Hanson (Mazelle) of Graz, Austria.

A memorial gathering is planned for 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Roberts Cafe in Roberts.
