Join the Carbon County Arts Guild Aug. 2, for the First Friday Art Walk in Red Lodge and enjoy two great exhibitions. In the Main Gallery see Barbara Van Cleve: Pure Quill, a black and white photography exhibition that features genuine ranch life. In the North Gallery view the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) trunk show that allows audiences to engage with art quilts in an up-close and personal way. Both exhibitions will open to the public Aug. 2, from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Pure Quill will be on view Aug. 2-26. The SAQA trunk show will only be on view Aug. 2-15.

Born and raised on a working cattle and horse ranch in Montana’s Crazy Mountains, for seven decades Barbara Van Cleve has focused her lens on land and sky and the men, women, and animals that animate it. In riveting compositions and captivating textures, Van Cleve’s photographs in the exhibition Pure Quill, dispel the Hollywood myths associated with the West, while conveying its true adventure and vibrant personalities.

The trunk show is one of SAQA’s eight traveling trunk shows and has traveled several states in the U.S. as well as Canada. SAQA, a professional organization that is 30 years old with 3,500 members from all over the world, is designed to showcase a diversity of talent and support the SAQA mission to “promote the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation, and publications.”

This set of 56 art pieces began their journey in the spring of 2017 and will travel through the spring of 2020. Four members in the region have art in this trunk, including Red Lodge artist Maggy Rozycki Hiltner. Each quilt is 10 x 7 inches, mounted on a black 12 x 9 inch backing board, and sealed inside a clear envelope. The artist's location, artwork title, statement and information about techniques and materials are on the back.
