The ballots have gone out to determine whether there will be a Cemetery District #8 and the deadline for return is Dec. 12.
The ballot states “the District will be financed by a perpetual tax levy of 6 mils which is expected to have an annual impact of $6.75 on a house with a fair market value of $100,000.00 and $13.50 on a house with a fair market value of $200,000.” However, this figure is not set in stone. As property values for tax purposes (i.e. taxable values) rise, the mils will rise and rates will go up. They can also go down.
The interlocal agreement between the county and city that restricts the use of the funds for the cemetery district is in process and has not been signed to date.
