Cemetery Vote

To the Editor,
The time, at long last, has come for the “people” to exercise their voting privilege. The “people” would be the registered voters of Carbon County precincts 8, 9, 10 and 11.
The mail-in ballot goes out this week on the referendum question to establish Carbon County Cemetery District #8 – Red Lodge.
The #8 indicates that the Red Lodge Cemetery is the last sizeable public memorial park to be organized into a District. The previous seven districts are long standing, some created back in the 1950’s.
Districts are established to provide for a community tax-based support system for the maintenance and operation of these historically hallowed grounds. The District operates with an appointed Board that establishes a budget, organizes the operation and care of the cemetery and works to maintain a place of community pride and respect.
The Red Lodge Cemetery was started in the 1880’s. It has grown over the years to include 23 acres with over 6000 interments plus the Mausoleum.
Recently with the thoughtful help of the Draper Family Ranch, a seven tenths of an acre piece of land that had been used as cemetery space since 1894 has finally been officially recorded and included in the deeded cemetery property.
Please carefully read the referendum ballot when it arrives, then vote yes to authorize the creation of this special district and return your ballot to the Carbon County Election Office.
Your support today will mean a brighter future for this important part of our community.

Thanks for your help,
Dan Gainer
