On Sunday, September 9, a Community Appreciation BBQ Salute to Heroes was held at Lions Park in Red Lodge. The event was sponsored by the City of Red Lodge. City Council member Glory Mahan said, “It was a beautiful day! The turnout was amazing.”

Approximately 235 attended the event to honor first responders. “Good food, good time, and very well attended,” said Mahan. “The Stone Ridge Band did a wonderful job.”

Locals helped themselves to an abundance of barbecue and sides and lots of kids were running about to make it a happy event as heroes were acknowledged.

Red Lodge Mayor Bill Larson and Red Lodge Police Chief Jason Kelly each spoke of the great services provided to the community on a regular basis by our mostly silent and unacknowledged but devoted workers of protection, support and emergency services.

Also honored were members of the military with many veterans in attendance as well as the large number of supporters in the area including members of the veteran support group, Operation Second Chance, and members of the Yellow Ribbon Community.

The event has grown each year and the weather brings even more of the community out as families take this opportunity to share in the fun and enjoy one of the last warm days of summer.

Regarding all those kids running around, Mahan observed, “They’re our next leaders.”
