Volunteerism is at the core of all great organizations and communities. It is not a new concept, but did you know volunteerism is a high school graduation requirement? Almost all high schools now have a set number of hours each student must volunteer in order to graduate. Red Lodge high school students are required to complete 20 hours of volunteer service for graduation. Setting this requirement not only helps prepare students for college and employment, but helps make connections with local nonprofits.

For both college admissions and employment, volunteerism demonstrates a level of civic awareness, empathy for others and a commitment to service. Red Lodge High School partnered with the Red Lodge Area Community Foundation and held a volunteer fair at the high school. Students from freshmen to seniors circulated through 15 nonprofit booths. Matching students with an organization they feel passionately about is a key to developing a lifetime of volunteerism. Each booth had students asking questions about the type of work they were involved in and what their responsibilities as a youth volunteer would be. For many students the opportunity to volunteer can also lead to career paths they might not have otherwise considered.

When student volunteers are able to make the connection between volunteerism and exactly how it helps organizations or people on an individual basis they are more likely to make a habit of volunteerism. Thank you to the following nonprofits for attending the volunteer fair and helping our local youth.

Carbon County Arts Guild, Harvest Hope Volunteers, Special Olympics, Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary, Power to Speak Out, Beartooth Billings Clinic, The Willows, Boys’ and Girls’ Club, Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation, Hero’s Steam Engine, Carbon County Historical Society and Museum, Youth Advisory Board Mental Health Local Advisory Board, Red Lodge Area Community Foundation and Red Lodge Chamber of Commerce.
