Election procedures explained

The Federal elections are coming fast and furious with June 5 marking the Federal Primary Election and Nov. 6 the General Election.

With so many candidates in this year’s races, clarification of election procedures is required.

All uncontested candidates, meaning candidates with no one running against them, will not appear on the Primary Election ballot but will appear on the General Election ballot. This will apply to the posts of the Clerk and Recorder, the Treasurer and the Sheriff and three City Council positions.

The Carbon County Commissioners race however has thrown a curve ball into the proceedings this year. Usually only one seat is up for election but this year all three seats will appear on both the Primary and the General election ballot. For the Joliet and Bridger Districts, commissioner candidates will be elected to fill only the remainder of the term, in Joliet this is four years and in Bridger only two years. Red Lodge District candidates are running for the full six-year term.

There 10 candidates running in the Bridger district, three for Joliet and three for Red Lodge. There is also a write in candidate whose name will not appear on the ballot.

Election information is available on the Carbon County Commissioners website at co.carbon.mt.us
