Elks Hoop Shoot 2017

During the month of October, 537 students, ages 8 to 13 in schools throughout Carbon County, shot hoops to determine the winners in each school. These winners then participated in the Hoop Shoot Contest held on Nov. 11, 2017. The winners of this Hoop Shoot Contest will compete in the District Contest in Big Timber on Jan. 6, 2018.  If contestants win at District, they go to the State and if win there, then on to the National in Chicago.
For more than 45 years, the Elks Hoop Shoot has been developing gritty kids. Research suggests grit is a more accurate predictor of success than social intelligence, good looks, physical health or IQ. Participation in the Hoop Shoot encourages kids to set goals and work hard - keys to developing grit. These lessons help kids bounce back and keep trying even when they don't succeed the first time, whether on the court, in the classroom, or just living their lives.
The Co-Directors Warene Wall (pictured with 5 contestants) and Patrick Stokes say "thank you to the schools who held hoop shoots, to Red Lodge High School for use of the gym, and to all the volunteers who made the event a great success.”
Winners and runners-up of the Hoop Shoot are: 8-9 Category: Miya Hamilton Winner; Adisyn Kennedy 2nd Place; Hunter Gleason Winner; Cain Hanson 2nd Place. 10-11 category: Cori Coombe Winner; Kenzie Wilm 2nd Place; Owen Wallila Winner; Logan Young 2nd Place. 12-13 category: Katelyn Hamilton Winner; Abby DeRennaux 2nd Place; Townes Catron Winner; Stran Lytton 2nd Place.
