Evelyn Heer Aldrich

Thursday, May 31, 2018

Evelyn Heer Aldrich, 87 years old, of Joliet, passed away April 17, 2018 at the Riverstone Hospice Home in Billings, Montana, after a four-month illness.

She was born Jan. 26, 1931 in Doland, South Dakota to Otto and Ethel Heer, the firstborn of nine children.  She drove tractors, raised livestock and worked the family farm.  In August 1951, she received her teaching certificate from Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and taught in a one room school in rural South Dakota.   She married Odell “Buzz” Aldrich on Nov. 19, 1951 in Doland, South Dakota, and together they raised five children, moving several times before settling in Joliet, Montana in the early 70’s.

Evelyn worked as a teacher, waitress, store clerk, baker and finally the last three decades as the custodian for the government buildings in Joliet, up until her illness forced her to retire in December.

She leaves behind her husband of 66 years, Odell “Buzz” Aldrich; children Marlowe (Peg) Aldrich of Billings, Renee (Ben) Carlson of Roundup, Arlin (Patty) Aldrich of Lynwood, Washington, Rich (Donna) Aldrich of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Monica (Russ) Salo of Joliet.  Grandchildren Sam (Becky) Carlson, Brand (Cheyenne) Aldrich, Parker Aldrich, Kate Aldrich, Jake Salo, Hayley Aldrich, Colton (Deveney) Salo, Ashleigh Aldrich and Noah Salo, along with 10 great-grandchildren.   Sister Rosella (Monte) Boetel of Huron, South Dakota; brother Donald (Delaine) Heer of Britton, South Dakota; and sister Marlena (Dave) Hass of St Paul, Minnesota; along with many nieces and nephews and her friends in the community.  She is preceded in death by her parents and five siblings.

Mom was most proud of all of her children and grand-children’s accomplishments; she saved every school program, newspaper article and pictures of their achievements.  She passed on her passion for education, books, sewing, history, cooking, woodworking and photography to her children.  She will always be known for her excellent banana and fry breads; and her collections of bells, Christmas decorations, teddy bears, trains and cows.  Mom, you drove us crazy with your endless questions but we loved how much you shared your history, experiences and thoughtfulness with all of us.  We miss you so much!

Evelyn requested that no services be held. The family would ask that in her memory, you write a letter, read a book, plant flowers, stop at a yard sale or share your family history.  Memorials may be sent to Beartooth Hospice in Red Lodge or Riverstone Hospice Home in Billings. We thank them for the excellent care they provided mom (and her family) during her illness.  Cremation has taken place with Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel.
