A fire has broken out in the Beartooths, at Beartrack Trail off Highway 212 about 10 miles south of Red Lodge.

“We’ve called in units from neighboring towns including Roberts and Columbus, and ordered a helicopter (with bucket),” said Red Lodge Fire Chief Tom Kuntz. “It’s going to grow. It’s steep, rugged terrain. Difficult to fight.” Kuntz said as is, he doesn’t see it as a threat to the town at all or any structures.

The fire was started by hunters’ guns being fired while target practicing. “We have identified them,” said Carbon County Sheriff Josh McQuillan. “It’s very dry,” said Kuntz.
