Montana Circle of Excellence Program recognizes Cooper Frank of Carbon County in top hog ultrasound division.

The Montana Circle of Excellence Program recognizes Cooper Frank of Carbon County in top hog ultrasound division. Frank came second.

The Montana Symbol of Excellence program annually recognizes both youth and hog breeders who raise market hogs that meet carcass merit standards and who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in producing quality pork products. The Symbol of Excellence program was initiated in 1984 as a joint effort between the Montana Pork Producers Council and Montana State University Extension.

Carcass and ultrasound data were collected on 1,995 hogs from across the state of Montana with 22 percent qualifying to be Symbol of Excellence hogs. These hogs were shown by 4-H and FFA youth who committed to the market swine project from beginning to end. The Symbol of Excellence standards are based upon live weight, hot carcass weight, back fat, loin area, marbling, color, wetness, and firmness.

Anne Miller, executive director of Montana Pork Producers Council, said “The unique partnership between Montana Pork Producers Council and Montana State University Extension provides a vast amount of data to individuals that range from a 4th grade student who sold a hog for the first time to a seasoned pork producer with 20 years of experience. In each case, we hope the information collected and honors they receive are encouraging them to stay involved.”
