Iva Vergene “Jean” Tomicich

Thursday, March 7, 2019

Iva Vergene “Jean” Tomicich was born May 6, 1928 in Wolf Point, Montana to Ben and Jeanette Diedrich. Jean went to several different schools as her mother was a substitute teacher. She said her education was well-rounded. After graduation, she moved to Santa Barbara, California, and graduated from Beauty College. Knowing Montana was her home, she came back.

Jean went to work in Cooke City in 1950 where she met her husband Mike. They were married on Dec. 9, 1950, but Mike then passed away in 1978. After losing her husband, Jean started giving people who were in need rides to their medical appointments in Red Lodge and Billings. She said this opened up a new horizon to meet new people and she did this for many, many years.

Jean was a member of the Red Lodge Community Church. She was either the President or Vice President for 8 years for the Carbon County Council on Aging. She was a member of the VFW #4725 for 33 years and the Sr. Vice President for 12 of those years. Jean was also a Pink Lady for over 30 years and in 2012 was honored as the Volunteer of the Year at the Beartooth Billings Clinic. Jean also took pride in being a member of the Senior Citizen Center from its opening in 1972 and said it felt like a second home, with other members becoming a part of her second family. It was here in 2003; Jean was made the Senior Center Citizen of the Year.

Jean stated making cards as a hobby and soon was making them for all holidays for friends, family and those in who were in the hospital and local nursing homes. She greatly enjoyed making her cards, but giving them brought her ultimate joy.

Jean is survived by her sons, Michael (Debbie) and Wayne Tomicich; her daughter Kelle (Scott) VanNess; sister, Eva Lois McKee and her granddaughter, Danielle Tomicich, whom she loved very much.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Mike; daughter, Leslie and much loved grandson, James.
