Jack C. Steinmasel, 89, of Red Lodge, died on June 4, 2018.

Jack was born in Bearcreek on Aug. 14, 1928. He was the son of Adolph and Mary (Robertine) Steinmasel.

Jack joined the U.S. Navy in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1947. He was proud to be a WWII vet and for having served on the Destroyer RICH, DD-820. He also was delighted to tell of his opportunity to visit with the Pope when stationed in Italy.

Jack married Patricia Fern Kershnor in Red Lodge on Sept. 30, 1950. After a couple of years in Seattle, Washington, working for the Boeing Aircraft Company, they moved back to Red Lodge and never left.

He operated Harly’s Service for many years and still carried his Union Oil card that he received in 1955 and used it faithfully through last winter.

Jack was elected Carbon County Assessor and served for 12 years when he retired in 1991.

He loved to fish, until he bought his first set of golf clubs. Then he spent most of his spare time at the golf course, golfing with his buddies of the “Buffalo Herd”.

Jack was also a member of Beartooth Elk’s Lodge #534 and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Pat; a sister, Bettye Ruckor; and brothers, Bob and Ed.

Survivors include his three sons, Dusty (Janice), Jerry, and Jay (Tanya); a daughter, Lynda (Scott) Crawford; a brother Ken (Joyce); and sister, Dorothye; as well as grand children and great grandchildren.

A Jack’s request a private family memorial service will take place at a later date when he will be intered next to Pat in the John Henry Cemetery.
