Joliet Council concerns over lowering wastewater system

Concerns were raised at last month’s Joliet Council meeting by Public Works Director Charles Buechler to lower the Wastewater Auger System as requested by Doug Whitney, manager of the Drinking Water Technical center for Kadmas Lee & Jackson (KLJ) Engineering, Billings.
Whitney stated that everyone that was involved with the original sewer project was no longer with KLJ but he had Josh Sommers go through all of the paperwork. There was a note in the original plan that KLJ wanted Joliet to lower the water level by 6 inches in order for the grinder to work.
Buechler stated that he lowered the level when he was asked to but Whitney said that it needs to be lowered another 5 to 6 inches and that should take care of the problem but that is no guarantee.
Buechler stated that the City is unable to lower the level right now because of too much ground water coming in. He also has a concern about detention time with lowering the level.
Whitney stated that DEQ agrees with lowering the water level and KLJ will help with monitoring treatments when we are able to lower it. Buechler believes his department should be able to start lowering the level around the first week of February. Mayor Gary Gray and Buechler agreed that if DEQ recommends lowering the water level then we will lower the water level even though Buechler does have some concerns of it working.
Whitney stated again that KLJ will help watch it.
