Local store offers helping hand to Red Lodge workers

Steve Haman, owner and operator of Babcock & Miles, Red Lodge, is offering a helping hand to restaurant and mountain employees during the on-going Coronavirus shutdown.

“We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful restaurants and eateries in Red Lodge. While we all have our favorites, we need to come together as a community in support of all of them,” said Steve Haman, owner and operator of Babcock & Miles, Red Lodge. 

“With the Countywide mandatory closure of in-dining options because of the Coronavirus pandemic, our local restaurants have been immediately challenged with finding creative ways to stay open and continue to employ their staff,” said Haman. “Most have had to adopt a take-out or delivery service in order to just stay open while others have temporarily closed.” 

As a result Haman and his wife Kim have come up with an idea to support both the local restaurants and their employees.  

*Firstly, there will be a 25 percent discount on all groceries including wine and beer for each and every Red Lodge restaurant and Red Lodge Mountain employee and their families throughout the mandated closure time period. 

*Secondly, if you show a receipt dated March 18 and onwards from a Red Lodge restaurant showing the purchase of food and/or gift card you will receive a 10 percent discount on your purchase at Babcock & Miles. 

“If you wish to forgo receiving your 10 percent discount, we will in turn donate it to a fund that we are putting together to provide financial assistance to our local servers and their families who are in need,” said Haman. “Furthermore we will match  $500 to this fund.”

The restaurant owners and managers are helping Haman to identify those in need. 

In the event the funds do not get dispersed, Babcock & Miles will be purchasing gift cards and donating those from the restaurant and in turn donating them to local non-profits to use for future fundraising. 

“Collectively our local restaurants are one of Red Lodge’s largest employees. So while times will be tough on all of us in the coming weeks, the effect on the restaurant industry and all of those who are part of it has the potential to be particularly harsh.  This mandatory order may very well lead to job losses,” he said.

“I couldn’t imagine not being able to provide for my family if I lost my job. While there may be pending government assistance to those who lost their jobs due to the Coronavirus outbreak it certainly won’t be timely enough to help them pay their rent and buy food for their families,” said Haman. 

“This is about pay it forward, pay forward it, pay it forward,” said Haman. 

“As a local grocery store, Babcock & Miles with the support of our employees is committed to remaining open through all of this. We are so grateful and appreciative that we live in a community that cares so much about its town and its people,” said Haman. “Together we will get through this.”
