National Forest Service seeks comment on Sibanye-Stillwater Mine Vent Raise Proposal

Thursday, July 12, 2018

The Custer Gallatin National Forest is asking for public input on a proposal from Sibanye-Stillwater Mining Company to construct two ventilation raises on the Beartooth Ranger District.  The vent raises are proposed east of the Stillwater Mine in the Nye Creek drainage, about 3.5 miles south of Nye, Montana.

The raises would increase ventilation rates underground to facilitate ongoing mining operations and underground development on the east-side of the Stillwater Mine.  Most construction work would occur from underground.  The proposal includes preparing the break-out location in early August 2018.  Approximately 2 acres of new surface disturbance on the Custer Gallatin National Forest would occur.  Surface construction would be accessed via helicopter and be completed by October 2018.  Comments are being accepted through July 20, 2018.  Project information is available on the web at:
