New name chosen for 11th Street

11th Street and Broadway will change to read Mount Maurice Street and Broadway.
Margaret Karas was named as the winner of the ‘Street Naming’ competition held in Red Lodge recently. Karas originally chose Maurice Street to replace 11th Street but Mount was added by the Chamber of Commerce to clarify the name.
“We wanted it to be unique to Red Lodge,” said Chamber board member Glory Mahan. "Where the present 11th Street and Broadway sign is, you can see Mount Maurice in the background."
The renaming brings Red Lodge into compliance with the Carbon County Grid and provide for growth to the north. Mount Maurice Street is the very center of town and all streets north of it will start from 1st onwards and likewise from the south. The numbering system will help emergency services identify locations and make routes easier for delivery vehicles.
The Mayor presented an award to Sherry Weamer, codirector of the Chamber, who accepted it on behalf of Karas who was not present. Back Alley Metals made the award.
On Tuesday the City Council passed a Resolution of Intent saying this won’t take immediate effect as there are still numerous stages to go through before this can be completed.
