The Red Lodge City Council voted last Friday to agree to terms with K-9 Officer Maleri Cates regarding the ownership of the drug dog Drago.

Part of the agreement included Cates resignation from her position Oct. 13. Mayor Mike Schoenike stated, “this decision was brought to the table by her attorney.”
“At no time did the City request her resignation,” he said.

The City agreed to execute a bill of sale to her for the dog, pay her remaining sick leave and vacation pay, asked she return all City owned equipment, and pay Cates $5,000 for dismissing her law suit with prejudice, meaning she can’t sue the city. The Montana Municipal Interlocal Authority, the City’s insurance agency, will pay the $5,000.

The City will agree to defend and indemnify any or all claims and actions brought against Cates arising out of her employment with the City.

Cates was not present during the hearing but Council member Corey Thompson made a public apology to her and suggested better communications between departments may have helped in this situation.
