Carbon County Sheriff’s Department has a new deputy and a new Undersheriff.
Jeff Schmalz was appointed Under Sheriff back in October after Dan McJunkin left. Billings born Schmalz started in law enforcement in 2001 working in Joliet for 3 years. He was a deputy and detective for the department before this new post. He trained at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy. Law enforcement is “something I always wanted to do,” he said. He graduated from Skyview High School in Billings and likes to hunt and fish.
Joining the team is full time deputy Randy Kramer from Joliet. He graduated from Joliet High School in 2013 and trained at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy. He was a reserve deputy for a while and worked in law enforcement in Toole County in Shelby. He joined law enforcement because he “enjoys helping people and it’s just fun. An enjoyable job is a fun job.”
“I like it and know pretty much everybody. It’s where I wanted to come to,” said Kramer.
Kramer is married and has one child. He and his wife are expecting another child soon.
Carbon County Sheriff Josh McQuillan said of Kramer, “he’s doing well and we’re fortunate to have him. He’s a good asset with the training he’s received and the community ties.”
