Phyllis was born Sept. 23, 1931 to Harold D. and (Grace) Lucille (Whittwer) Hanna in Ainsworth, Nebraska. She left this earth on Aug. 16, 2018 surrounded by family. Phil was raised on a ranch south of Wood Lake, Nebraska in the Sand Hills of Cherry County. She graduated from Wood Lake High School in 1949 then attended the University of Nebraska Nursing School and graduated in June 1952 as an RN.

On June 20, 1952 Phyllis married Dr. Benjamin Karas in Wood Lake, Nebraska. After Ben’s residency in 1957 they settled in Red Lodge, Montana and she has lived there ever since. Together they raised 5 children: Dawn, Debra, Bill, Stacey and Dannielle. Phil loved attending all her children’s activities and was loving and will be most remembered about being unfailingly honest about her opinions.

Phil loved Red Lodge and she was active in the community. She was the first woman elected as a member of the Red Lodge School board and was active in the PEO and the Carbon County Arts Guild. She was a hospice volunteer, a barrel racer, skier, realtor and loved horses, dogs, art and playing (and winning) bridge. Her real passion, after nursing, was ranching. She finally found her dream ranch in 1970 and as a member of the International Charolais Association, raised Charolais cattle for over 20 years, including several world champion Charolais bulls.

Phyllis is preceded in death by husband Ben Karas, grandson Karas Malin, second husband Dan Woodard, and daughters Debra Darland and Danielle Kendall.

Survived by siblings Nancy Fosbender and John Hanna, children Dawn O’Shea (Michael), Bill Karas (Maggie), Stacey Lane (Todd), 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to join family as we reminisce and celebrate Phyllis’s life on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Beartooth Elks Lodge in Red Lodge from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Beartooth Billings Clinic Foundation or Carbon County Arts Guild, or the charity of your choice.

Special thanks to the caring, compassionate staff at The Willows Assisted Living and Beartooth Billings Clinic.
