Pierina Elizabeth

Thursday, March 28, 2019

Pierina Elizabeth (92) was born in Red Lodge, Montana, on May 19, 1926 to early Italian immigrants Giovanni(John) and Anna Ossola Boggio who had came to America from Northern Italy at the turn of the century seeking a better life. A fiercely patriotic and loyal family, Pierina's brothers, husband, five sons and three grandchildren have served their country in uniform around the world.  The American flag flys proudly at her home!

At the age of nine, Pierina began working to help support her large family picking beans on the Leo Pilati farm for a penny a pound!  By the age of 15, she worked in Yellowstone Park.  During WWII, she worked in the sugar beet fields so the boys could go off to war. She also worked at a variety of places in Red Lodge.

Pierina married Robert Phillips on Oct. 23, 1954 in Red Lodge.  She loved to cook and bake Italian food for friends and family whom would travel miles for her raviolis and gnocchi.  She was a talented crochet artist and made a variety of afghans, dolies, tablecloths and baby sets for birthdays, weddings, new babies and many other occasions.  She had an opportunity to travel to Italy to meet relatives for the first time and see the country her parents came from.  Pierina was a member of St Agnes church and a 70-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.   Even though hindered by physical disabilities, Pierina lived independently at home where she enjoyed frequent visits from family and friends and watching all the old westerns on TV.

Pierina was preceded in death by her parents John and Anna, husband Bob, her son Jerry Ransdell and daughter in law Julie Jakola Phillips, her brothers Henry, Joseph, Eugene, Aldo, Edward and John Boggio, sisters Katherine Goodall, Angie Haagenson, Barbara Johle and Mary Sheppard.

Survivors include her six sons Richard (Donna) Ransdell, Dayton, Nevada, James Ransdell, Red Lodge, Montana, Robert Phillips, Elko, Nevada, William (Carla) Phillips, Forsyth, Montana, Fred (Joyce) Phillips, Billings, Montana, Tom Phillips, Lima, Ohio, and her daughter Jeannie (Dennis) Purcell, Red Lodge, Montana, 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 9 great great grandchildren, daughter in law Karen Ransdell, Mesquite, Nevada, brother in law James Phillips, Red Lodge, Montana, numerous cousins in Italy, many nieces and nephews and her best friends Mary and Joe Lefebvre.

Pierina, a woman small of stature, but with a huge heart will be dearly missed.  Her family pledges unto God to carry on the virtues she had instilled in us!

Love of Life! Love of family! Love of God! Love of country!

Also love of raviolis and gnocchi!!
