The Red Lodge Rangers U19 team picked up its 2nd trophy in the Montana Classic Cup tournament in 3 years last weekend when they upset defending champs Sidney to win 4-3 on penalties in the final at Miles City.

“I am extremely proud of the young men and women of the Red Lodge U-19 soccer team, not only did they just bring home the MT State Classic Soccer Cup but they had a great season,” said head coach Justin Modroo.  “They played the game with respect, a love for the team, and most of all exemplified great sportsmanship!  Congratulations to all the athletes, parents, family, and friends and thank you all for the opportunity to coach such wonderful athletes.”

The U19 team defeated Lewistown 4-0 in their opening match, securing victory with goals from Robert Butler, James Graham, Lucius Payovich, and Caeden Peterson.

Next up was Sidney who proceeded to turn the tables on Red Lodge and gain a 4-0 victory.

Red Lodge bounced back from this defeat putting 4 passed Miles City to win 4-1. Goals came courtesy of James Graham who scored a brace, Robert Butler, and Eli Lauver.

The results put Red Lodge in a tie for 2nd place overall with Lewistown who they beat on a tie-breaker because of head-to-head play.

The win paved the way for a meeting with Sidney in the final.

In an amazing seesaw match, Red Lodge drew first blood with a goal by Graham in the 20th minute. With time ticking away though, Sidney scored an equalizer with 10 minutes remaining. The 1-1 scoreline at the final whistle meant penalties.

Heroes come in many forms on the field of play and none more than the goalkeeper on such occasions as Red Lodge’s Sam Murfitt came up with two huge saves that made the difference and brought the cup back to Red Lodge with a 4-3 win in the penalty shootout.

“A total of 18 local high-school athletes just enjoyed a story-book ending with a shoot-out victory in the final game of our league’s state championship in Miles City, upsetting the undefeated Sidney Strikers,” said coach Keith Lauver.

“Our local Red Lodge Rangers capped off a beautiful season in which we saw incredible growth in skills, teamwork and character,” said Lauver.

“Thanks players, families, coaches, RLYS board, fans, and mentors for allowing us to watch as the very best was drawn out of these awesome young people over our season. While the championship was the icing on the cake, the real victories for each of them were ones many won’t see but for which their coaches will always be so proud,” he said.
