The juniors, sophomores and freshman that make up the Lady Rockets volleyball team could rightly be hailed as champions in their own right after finishing 2nd at the 4C District tournament Absarokee last weekend to win their first ever district trophy.

Roberts coach Melissa Bertolino and team were ecstatic at the result.

“It’s a huge achievement for the team and the program.  There are no seniors on the team, only juniors, sophomores and freshman. It’s been a goal for the girls and they have put in the hard work to get it done,” said Bertolino.  “We have had great support from the parents and community as well. Couldn’t have done it without all the support.”

The Lady Rockets opened their campaign with an easy rout of Fromberg 25-14, 25-9, 25-8.

Grayce Payovich exerted her dominance with 9 aces along with 6 digs while of the 19 assists Bentley Bertolino made 18. There were 25 kills of which Kimberly Bear got 10 and McKenzie Pitts made 3 blocks. Emma DeVries got 5 digs.

The win set Roberts up against Park City who they duly dispatched 25-16, 25-7, 25-10. Bear added 6 aces to her name with DeVries on 4 with Bertolino dominating the assists again with 24. DeVries and Pitts shared 9 kills each and out of 45 digs, Bertolino made 12, with Payovich, Bear and DeVries all on 8.

Enter game 3 and up against Bridger. Roberts lost this hard-fought battle 24-26, 25-14, 25-12 only capturing 2 aces this time. Bertolino led in assists with 16 with Bears and Pitts picking up 8 and 6 kills respectively. Pitts also made three blocks and 6 digs along with Bertolino and Payovich. DeVries got 9.

The defeat sent Roberts into the 3rd place game against Reed Point/Rapejle who they overcame in flourishing style 25-15, 25-13, 25-2 and with energy to spare.

Payovich and Makayla Pratt had 4 aces each with Bertolino getting all 26 assists. Bear and DeVries got the majority of kills with 15 and 13 respectively with DeVries also getting 5 digs along with Pitts.

Back to Bridger the Roberts team went and this time for the Championship. Unfortunately, the stamina ran from the Lady Rockets who went down 12-25, 11-25, 18-25. DeVries made 4 aces, all 19 assists went to Bertolino, with Pitts and Bear picking up the majority of kills at 8 and 7. There were 36 digs, DeVries 13, Pitts and Pratt with 7 each.

Roberts now play Tri-City, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. at Laurel High School.
