A 65-year-old male died Sunday, May 27, when his kayak overturned on Rock Creek 10 Miles south of Red Lodge.

Edward Conning, 66 of Cody, Wyoming, had struck a fallen tree and drowned according to Carbon County Sheriff Josh McQuillan.

Red Lodge Fire Chief Tom Kuntz confirmed that Conning “was stuck under water for about 10--15 minutes before being dislodged, traveling further downstream and got caught up in a tree.”

The incident occurred about a quarter mile from last July’s fatal kayaking accident.

“This is unfortunate, these kayakers have been kayaking this river for a very long time. Kayaking is a dangerous sport and sometimes you see accidents. These folks are highly experienced,” said Kuntz.

“We responded with 25 personnel including Red Lodge Fire Rescue, ambulance and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Department,” said Kuntz.

Rescue efforts were also aided by local kayakers.
