Two members of Red Lodge Search and Rescue approach the stricken semi-truck to rescue the driver.

A semi-truck crashed into the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River, south of Belfry, at approximately 10:00 AM this Monday. The semi-trailer split in half with the cab landing in the middle of the river.  The demolished trailer, and its spilled contents of toilet paper, remained on the highway blocking traffic.

Red Lodge Search and Rescue, Red Lodge Fire, Belfry Fire, Bridger EMS and the Carbon County Sheriff were involved in the operation.  The driver was rescued from his cab by Search and Rescue personnel in specialized dry suits, across the frigid river, and to the bank. The driver was evaluated by EMS but had minor injuries and was not transported to a hospital.

Road conditions in Carbon County were slippery Monday morning but the cause of the accident is under investigation.  The Carbon County Sheriff's office stresses that road conditions can change quickly especially with recent snowfall and wind. Please check local road conditions before travelling.
