Dancers enjoyed the evening at the Sons of Norway Folk Dance Workship.

A fund-raising donation included a unique Norwegian-style, hand carved wood box or “tine” by Greg Aldrich.

The Sons of Norway conducted a Folk Dance Workshop last weekend (March 29, 30 and 31) in Red Lodge, MT.    Officially known as the Sons of Norway District IV Folk Dance Workshop, this workshop teaches dances from the Scandinavian countries.

About 32 participated in the dance workshop sessions including dance instructor, Bob Holmen of Red Lodge and fiddler Vidar Skrede originally from Norway.  At the banquet and dance Saturday evening at Red Lodge Beartooth Elks Lodge, attendance was approximately 45.

People traveled from the following areas - Rapid City, South Dakota, Jamestown, North Dakota, Fargo, North Dakota, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Billings, Montana, Red Lodge, Montana, New York City, New York - Maren Holmen, daughter & assistant dance instructor, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Vidar Skrede, fiddler.

The Sons of Norway is an international fraternal organization for people of Norwegian heritage or have an interest in Norwegian culture and tradition.  It is composed of eight districts in the US, Canada, and Norway.  District IV includes Alberta, Saskatchewan, North Dakota, and Montana.

An unexpected surprise at the Saturday banquet included the raffling off of a large lidded box called a tine (pronounced “tee-nah”). The particular style of carving on Aldrich’s raffle tine is acanthus carving. This unique, artisan box was carved by Billings dancer, Greg Aldrich, and was donated as a way to generate interest in the workshop.  Scandinavian artisans were making similar lidded boxes long before the Shakers settled in America.  As Scandinavian antique collectors know, tines come in all shapes and sizes and can be plain,  highly decorated, painted or intricately carved.
