Third Time’s A Charm

Roberts’ boys place 3rd at the MHSA Class C State track meet in Helena last week. The team accumulated 33 points, 6 points less than last year when they finished runners-up. It marks the schools third state trophy in 3 years. Six years ago the school didn’t even have a cross-country program. For the Rockets, Andy Van Ornum finished 6th on 17:38.86; Boone Schmaltz 12th with 17:54.66; Ryan Devries 15th on 18:06.26, Garret Pitts 25th on 19:25.99 and Allexander Kosel 40th on 20:07.12.
While times where hard to smash from last year, every team member improved on their placing from 2016 with Pitts jumping 40 places, DeVries 16 places and Kosel 20 places.
“It was a gritty course, times might not have shown but it was the same for everyone, Double AA and down to C class,” said Van Ornum. “Everyone’s times were not the best but it was a course of guts and I feel our school showed a lot of guts and passion for the sport. We had a lot of individuals step up and grow over the last week of the season, that is good to see.”
Coach Jene Reinhardt was delighted with the performances.
“DeVries ran a personal best by 44 seconds and was one place away from medaling,” she said.  “Pitts had an awesome run placing 25th with a time of personal best time of 19:25.99, and Kosel completed the Rocket team with a time of 20:07.12 placing 40th. These athletes had an outstanding year, and they were one of the best groups I've ever coached.”
It is also a “bitter-sweet” admitted Reinhardt as Van Ornum and Kosel are graduating this year.
“We will lose two seniors who bring a lot, not only to our team, but to our school. I couldn't ask for better leaders in every aspect. I'm thankful I was able to be their coach, and I'm so excited for the bright future they have ahead of them,” she said.
“As for next year we're going to have another great group representing Roberts. Ryan DeVries and Boone Schmaltz will be seniors with Garret Pitts as a returning junior. We hope to add a couple Freshman to the roster to round off another great Rockets team.  As for this year what an awesome finish.  I couldn't be prouder of these young men,” said Reinhardt.
Van Ornum, who sees distance running in his future, added, “I am leaving a program that will be successful in years to come. It was cool to see.”
“Six years ago we didn’t have a program but to have 3 trophies over the last three years is pretty tremendous, knowing there are a lot of schools that have been passionate about this sport since the mid 90s,” he said.
Van Ornum praised Reinhardt.
“I’ve grown to love the sport not just the physical side but the mental and psychological side. It’s a pretty beautiful sport. Coach pulled my mental ability out and showed a lot of these individuals how to prosper to their greatest potential.”
“He’s played a huge role in building this program. He’s a strong leader and seeing the growth from Freshman to senior is tremendous and to see him finish so high and so well, I’m pretty proud,” said Reinhardt.
