Joliet girls reached the Southern B Divisionals at the expense of the two-time state champs Red Lodge who they defeated twice on their way to the championship game against Huntley Project.
Although Huntley won the main prize the J-Hawks proved worthy opponents, at one point leading 2 sets to 1, before the Red Devils found some extra pep to take the game 25-17, 24-26, 20-25, 28-26, 15-6.
The J-Hawks made 43 kills against the Red Devils, 13 by Makeanna Bushman, and served up 7 aces, 3 from Joelle Luoma.
Shayla Webber  and Luoma  shared 37 of the 40 assists with Webber and Tayler Wright digging up 48 digs out of 98. Bushman also made 3.5 blocks.
Joliet had started off the tournament with a bye prior to meeting Red Lodge, who had defeated Shepherd 25-22, 25-11, 25-13 in their opening game and later defeated Columbus 3-0.
The Rams kept pace with the J-Hawks taking the 3rd set but ultimately were overpowered, 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19.
The J-Hawks made 51 kills, Luoma on 14 with 14 aces served, Webber with 8. Webber also made 20 assists and 20 digs with Vanassa Nowak notching up 3 blocks.
The result took Joliet to the undefeated Semi Final against Huntley Project who won 25-23, 25-21, 25-18. This time Bushman led in kills with 13 from 32 and Webber and Nowak shared the aces with one apiece. Luoma and Webber made 27 assists total with Bushman and Webber on 17 digs each and Bushman with 3 blocks.
The defeat put Joliet in the loser out game against the Lady Rams and this time the J-Hawks tightened up their approach taking the game 25-18, 25-17, 25-11.
Bushman continued her run of kills with 15, sharing the digs again with Webber making 25 together. Eight aces were served, three by Merrin Schwend. Webber got 21 assists with Luoma on 11 and Bushman made 2.5 blocks.
“To say I am proud of these girls is an understatement,” said Coach Colette Webber. “They played well all weekend and fought for a spot to go to Divisionals. They competed well with Huntley and played with fearless hearts.  I feel like we are just peeking in our season and we know we have to keep working hard to get one of the top spots at Divisionals.  This is a team where everyone contributes and there are no small roles. They are very united and close. That makes it fun to coach.”
