“I’d like to be part of the solution. I didn’t set out to run,” said Dave Westwood in his opening statement at the candidate forum at the Beartooth Elk’s Lodge, Red Lodge, last week.
Westwood is the lone candidate for Ward 1.
As with the Ward 2 and Ward 3 candidates he answered the same questions about the police chief, rate rises and the Resort Tax.
With the police chief position he feels “the council should be consulted and everyone must have input.”

“It’s important to respect the system that is there, and expect to be consulted and ask questions,” he said.
He has concerns over the vacant lot rate proposal although he understood the reason because “the rates have been ignored for so long and (we’re) trying to make up for lost time.”
“It is not the easiest of decisions. The average town in Montana collected 86 percent of what they make in revenue. Red Lodge is at 83 percent,” he said. He felt it was important to consider people and businesses as “partner investors in Red Lodge.”
The Resort Tax is important to the town but “make sure more is spent as intended,” he said.

Regarding the recent NDR discussion he felt there were other issues that needed attention and feels it has created “derisiveness where there wasn’t before.”
“I think it is sad. It has created an environment that some one who opposes this resolution is construed to be a hater or not tolerant,” he said.

As to City Hall being more ADA compliant, he responded that his dad was a quadriplegic for 58 years and knows something of the issues. He would like to see City Hall improved and said there are lots of ways to do it and inexpensively.
