What to do when you find a stray dog

As anyone who own dogs can attest, it’s very easy for the most beloved pets to go astray. Here are some guidelines for what to do if you find a lost dog in Carbon County and want to help reunite the dog and his owner. First, no matter where you live or where you have found a dog (within city limits or in the county), call the Carbon County Sheriff's Office at 446-1234 to file a report. Additionally, if you have found a dog within the city limits of Bridger, Fromberg, or Red Lodge, call your local police department to file a report. Finally, call BHA at 446-3500 to also file a report. It is important you call all these places to help facilitate reuniting owners with their pets.

Although BHA does not have the authority to respond to animal control issues (for example, stray dog intake), we can often help by using our social networks and email contacts to alert owners and the public about a lost or found pets. If you have found a lost dog or cat, send a picture of the found animal to info@beartoothhumane.org with details such as when and where the animal was found, gender, and where the animal is currently located. We have been very successful at using this information to match owners and pets.
The best way to make sure your dog will make it home safe if he ever runs away is to have your dog microchipped, make sure he ALWAYS has a collar with ID tags, and to never allow your dog to roam unsupervised.

Beartooth Humane Alliance is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that assists the people and animals of Carbon County, Montana, by helping companion animals in need, promoting responsible animal care through education, providing solutions to dog and cat overpopulation, and serving as an animal welfare resource. Visit www.beartoothhumane.org for more information.
