2019 Montana Teacher of the Year choices now open

Superintendent Arntzen has announced that nomination and application forms are available for the 2019 Montana Teacher of the Year Program. Members of the public can fill out a simple form to nominate a teacher.

Teachers can self-nominate by filling out an application. All current and actively teaching Montanans who are making a positive difference in the lives of students are encouraged to apply. If nominated, the OPI will reach out to the nominated teacher and ask them to fill out an application.

Nomination forms are due back to the OPI by May 1 and completed applications are due by June 1. They can be emailed to MTTOY@mt.gov. Applications, nomination forms, and additional information can be found at: http://opi.mt.gov/Educators/Teaching-Learning/Montana-Teacher-of-the-Year.

“As a teacher blessed to have spent 23 years in Billings’ classrooms, I know how crucial it is to celebrate highquality educators who promote student success,” Arntzen said Thursday. “I encourage all Montana communities to join me in elevating their exceptional teachers.”

Montana’s program is part of the National Teacher of the Year Program conducted by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), of which Montana’s Superintendent of Public Instruction is a member. The Montana Teacher of the Year is chosen from a group of ten regional teachers selected by committees from each of the nine Montana Association of School Superintendent regions and an American Indian educator chosen by the Montana Indian Education Association to ensure geographic and cultural diversity.

These ten teachers will be celebrated in their communities and reviewed by a statewide committee of education and community stakeholders to narrow the pool to three semi-finalists. The semi-finalists will be invited to interview in-person to determine the Montana Teacher of the Year. The winner will be announced during a celebration ceremony at the Montana Capitol in October. The Montana Teacher of the Year will then compete to become the National Teacher of the Year.
