Students at Red Lodge High School united this week to show their support and sought to bring awareness surrounding Childhood Hunger in the community and the state of Montana.

April 17-23 was Fight Childhood Hunger Week and under the leadership of Lilly Fouts, a sophomore at Red Lodge High School and a member of the Governor’s and First Lady’s Council on Childhood Hunger,  activities were planned throughout the week to bring awareness to this issue. Fouts decorated the halls and commons in orange and on Wednesday April 18, students and staff participated in Wear Orange Wednesday, when hundreds of professionals, community members, and students across the state wore orange clothing, took photos of themselves, and posted it on social media to show their support for ending childhood hunger.

Oranges were handed out to all the students and everyone who wore orange had their name put in for some amazing prizes from the community businesses. Throughout the week, a contest was held to collect food for the high school food pantry, Harvest Hope.  Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors and Staff participated in the drive. The Juniors won the competition earning a pizza party sponsored by a grant from Kid’s Corner in Red Lodge.

Over 450 pounds of food was collected for the pantry. Fouts continued her quest at the Community Clean-up Day and Block Party hosting a ring toss booth and collecting $145 to help with expenses for Harvest Hope.

Nearly 1 out of every 5 kids in Montana will struggle with hunger during their childhood. The mission of the council is to bring awareness and to end child hunger in Montana by connecting kids to the healthy food they need to succeed in the communities where they live.
