Special Olympic Athletes showed their courage and athleticism last week as they compete in the Yellowstone Valley Area Special Olympic Summer Games in Billings, Montana.

Athletes competed in track and field, bocce, and golf over three days. Athletes are divisioned by their skill level, times and distances submitted by coaches. The Games began on Friday with Opening Ceremonies and the lighting of the torch.

Some of Friday’s events included wheelchair races, walks, sprints, baseball throw, and turbo jav. Red Lodge Olympians competing were Lloyd Makes Coldweather (100 m, 200 m, Turbojav), Bryan Whitaker (motorized wheelchair slalom, baseball throw), Katherine Collins( manual Wheelchair race, baseball throw), Tracy Wrobel (50 m Walk, baseball throw), Susan Littlenest (50 M walk, baseball throw), Kelli Luoma (baseball throw), and Jesse Stoecker (50 M walk, baseball throw).  Each placed in their division and brought home many ribbons for their accomplishments. The athletes celebrated on Friday evening with a marvelous dinner and dance hosted by the Yellowstone Valley Area Special Olympics committee.

On Saturday, athletes competed in Bocce. Bocce is an Italian lawn bowling game.Tracy ,Susan Littlenest, Kelli Luoma, Katherine Collins and Jesse Stoecker, along with their Unified Partners, Megan White, Alayna Smith and Lilly Fouts, competed in this all day event at Rose Park in Billings. Unified partners are athletes that team up with Special Olympic athletes to compete in a sport.  After each team played three matches, the winners were announced. The Red Lodge Olympians took home three first place awards and one second place award.

On Saturday, Special Olympians, Jesse Stoecker and Kelli Luoma braved the rainy weather and competed in the Golf competition.  Jesse placed first in his individual skills competition and Kelli placed second in her individual skills competition. Kelli also placed first in her 9 hole competition which turned into five holes due to inclement weather.

This amazing opportunity would not be possible without many hours of volunteer service by members of the Red Lodge Community.  Thank you to Adam and Megan White, Heidi Hofffman, Lilly Fouts, Alayna Smith, Rich and Cindy Luoma for making this dream possible for our athletes.  A big shout out to Headwaters Studio and Screenprinting for donating all of our track uniforms for our athletes.
